Bahrain Bans Citizens from Traveling to Iraq, Iran

(MENAFN) Bahrain has prohibited its citizens from traveling to both Iraq and Iran, the country's Interior Ministry announced Tuesday, invoking what it described as a dangerously volatile regional security environment in the wake of recent military confrontations.

"Due to the continued tense security situation resulting from the repercussions of the sinful Iranian aggression, and in order to safeguard national security and the safety of all citizens, the Ministry of Interior announces the decision to ban citizens from traveling" to Iraq and Iran, the ministry said in a statement cited by a state news agency.

The ban will remain in force "until further notice," the ministry said, warning that Bahraini authorities will take all necessary measures against "violators."

The sweeping travel restriction comes against a backdrop of sharply heightened regional tensions triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with retaliatory attacks against Israel and US allies across the Gulf, while simultaneously shutting the Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint through which a significant share of the world's oil supply flows.

A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, but subsequent diplomatic talks held in Islamabad collapsed without producing a durable settlement.

Both sides have since remained locked in an exchange of proposals and counterproposals, with efforts to resume direct negotiations and bring the conflict to a formal close still ongoing.
